FB Chaînes launches in France

A new member of the FB Group of materials handling chain companies has opened for business. From now on FB Chaînes will supply conveyor chain, roller chain, leaf chain and associated parts, as well as application advice, installation and servicing, to customers throughout France.

Over its 145-year history the FB Group has grown from a small factory near Stockholm, Sweden to an influential player in the materials handling chain industry with subsidiaries in six countries – Sweden, Norway, Finland, UK, Austria and Germany – and distributors in several more.

Nigel Eames recently joined the ever growing FB Chain to take on an exciting new role as manufacturing manager.

Nigel has over 20 years’ engineering experience, mainly working with the Cosworth and TWR engines in the motorsport sector. His experience is in working with low to medium volume bespoke components for a wide customer base ranging from Aerospace to Formula One. Whilst seeming very different to chain, the batch size and traceability elements make Nigel’s production experience very relevant to the products that FB Chain manufactures and supplies.

Switching to a new IT system can be hard for any business and after 12 years FB Chain took the decision to upgrade its accounts and stock control systems...

Karen Barton, finance manager explains: “When our original system was purchased we were much smaller. Over the years, as we grew, we added a number of extra systems and used an ever increasing number of spreadsheets to manage data which resulted in our system struggling to keep up. ITA survey good news for forklift manufacturers

The production of powered industrial trucks—or forklifts—continues to grow steadily this year, as data from the Industrial Truck Association (ITA) shows an estimated expected growth of two to three percent for 2013 over 2012 figures, with another one to two percent increase anticipated in 2014.

In survey results from April just released, ITA members estimated the 2013 market for forklifts at approximately 179,000 to 184,000 units, compared to 178,904 for 2012. In addition, 89 percent of members expect that in 2013, they will increase overall factory shipments above 2012 levels.

UK manufacturing growth hits a 20-month high

The UK manufacturing sector ended 2012 with its fastest growth rate for 20 months and the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) hitting a 15-month high of 51.4.

According to the monthly survey conducted by the Chartered Institute for Purchasing & Supply (CIPS) and Markit, the sector’s higher output reflected improved demand from the domestic market, while new export orders fell again as they had every month during 2012.

Manufacturers invest more to plug skills gap

British manufacturers are increasing their investment to meet the demand for skilled employees, according to a new survey by EFF, the manufacturers’ organisation. However, only a minority of manufacturers say that the government’s efforts to create a simpler demand-led skills system have made it easier for them to invest in the skills they need.

“Manufacturers are taking the initiative to ensure that skills gaps don’t hold them back from their ambitions to develop new products and services and expand into new markets,” says the EEF’s head of employment and skills policy, Tim Thomas. “But despite the government’s best efforts, investing in apprenticeships and finding the right qualifications, training courses and provider is still far from straightforward.
